This elegant colonial gave us the opportunity to explore one of the most debated design dilemmas of our era: is the kitchen open to the family room or not? For most, the obvious answer is “yes,” especially for a family with young children. But working a “great room” into a traditional colonial seemed inauthentic to the roots of this grand home.
After many revisions, we found a division that was the perfect compromise between a traditional plan and a modern, easy-living great room. Enriching this family home are an expansive mudroom, rear office and second staircase leading from the mudroom to a bonus playroom. The foyer features a winding staircase leading to a cozy, landing from which the four bedrooms branch off. Driving home the tradition of this style are wood windows, a brick chimney and front stoop, and clear cedar plank siding.
